The Turangalîla-Symphony is a work for Orchestre and two Soliste S, composed by Olivier Messiaen between 1946 and 1948. It was presented for the first time in 1949, by the Symphony orchestra of Boston, under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, with Yvonne Loriod and Ginette Martenot as soloists.
This Symphonie has, as soloists, a Piano and Ondes Martenot - oscillating monodic electronics.
Messiaen said that the title of the symphony comes from two words in Sanscrit, Turanga and Lîla , bound, and the translation of Turangalîla can be “love song, anthem of joy, movement, rate/rhythm, life and died”.
The Turangalîla-Symphony is the central part of a trilogy illustrating the topic of love and death. The first part of this trilogy is the cycle of Chanson S Harawi - poem of love and dead -, and the third part is Five Rechants , for chorus has cappella .
