The minarchism is a political theory calling of its wishes a minimum State (or minimal State ), tiny room within strict limits of legitimacy. The term probably dates from the years 1970 and is the French equivalent of the minarchism English .

The State being characterized like a Monopoly of violence, its legitimate prerogatives are often identified with the only fields where violence is justified, the “functions Régalien born” from the State: the maintenance of law and order, justice, the defense of the territory. One speaks then about State gendarme. Sometimes, the minarchists also assign in the State of the infrastructures which they consider essential, such as for example the roadway system.

The minarchism, calling with a limitation of the State, is thus an alternative of the Libéralisme and is thus opposed to the state control. Within liberalism, one will oppose the Anarchist-capitalism to him.

In intellectual margin of the minarchism (but with a political base good wider), one can find social democrats, and Néo-conservatives, which have a very proactive vision of the maintenance of law and order by the State.
