List sovereigns of Monaco
The Maison of Grimaldi was one of the most powerful families of old the République of Genoa. The Germanic Roman Emperor Henri VI had conceded the rock of Monaco with Genoa in 1191, with load for this one to build there a fortress, which will start to see the day only in 1215.
Following the frequent exiles which the génoises big families undergo during this time, one found Grimaldi in all the area of the maritime Alps, in particular around Nice. These Grimaldi were indeed combined of Charles of Anjou, king de Sicile and count de Provence. Grimaldi and their allies Guelfes will frequently find refuge in Monaco. The little story wants that François Grimaldi -- known as the Crafty one or the Malicious -- and its band were disguised as monks to seize the fortress in 1297, without being able to consolidate this profit. They will be the efforts of the Co-lords Antoine (+1358, stem of the connects of Antibes) and Charles (+1357), and a century later of Lambert (1425-1494), which will durably establish the sovereignty of Grimaldi in Monaco.
These sovereigns were known until there like lords of the place. The title of Prince de Monaco will be used starting from 1612 by Honore II Grimaldi, and will be recognized by the Spanish Empire and the Kingdom of France.
