List primacies of the orthodoxe Church copte
This list of the popes coptes constitutes the uninterrupted continuation of the apostolic successors of holy Marc as recognized by the Church Copte.
The Church Copte makes go up its patriarchal succession with holy Marc which remained with Alexandria from 43 to 49 then from 61 to 67. Between these two periods, it ordered a bishop, Annianos (Anien), in load of the Christian community of Alexandria. After the martyrdom of holy Marc in 67, holy Anien succeeds to him like second bishop on the seat of Alexandria. During the first three centuries of the Egyptian Church the bishop of Alexandria was appointed by the local priests who chose one as of theirs. He, thereafter and until our days, was elected by a synod and was chosen among the priests, the monks or the hermits (NB: the last two patriarchs coptes were thus hermits). The authority of the bishop of Alexandria on the other Egyptian dioceses extended quickly, this one being historically one of the first ecclesiastical authorities to decide nomination of the priests in the various dioceses. The title of Pape was given to the bishop of Alexandria starting from the pontificate of Denis of Alexandria (towards 250).
The current Pope of Alexandria, Chenouda III, is the 117e Patriarche.
(NB: If the list of the popes coptes always includes/understands the same names whatever the sources, the dates of pontificate differ sometimes from several years because of the lack of reference documents. In addition, the patriarchal election taking place by vote, it arrived more once a certain time passed between the vacancy of the apostolic seat and the establishment of the new elected official.)
