List of LiveCD

A LiveCD is a bootable operating system starting from an external memory support. One distinguishes the liveCDs general practitioners from the liveCDs directed towards a particular field.

General practitioners

The liveCDs general practitioners are not dedicated to a particular field. They give access to all the basic functions of an operating system (tools Internet S, software of Bureautique, reading Multimédia, etc).

; Fedora: sponsored distribution by Red Hat. ; Gentoo: Community distribution. ; Kaella: Knoppix Linux Azure, in French. ; Knoppix: based on Debian. Its Environnement of office is KDE. ; Mandriva Linux : distribution of Mandriva. ; Mepis: first Distribution Linux to propose the installation on the hard drive starting from the liveCD. ; Slax: based on Slackware, one of the popular first liveCD. ; SuSE: published by Novell. ; Ubuntu: distribution of the company Canonical Ltd. Are also available Kubuntu (with KDE) and Xubuntu (with Xfce).

Compact

These distributions have the advantage of being able to hold on a small key USB or CD of reduced format. It can also be used to make function a computer having little random access memory or an hard drive of small capacity.

The following distributions less do all than 210 Mo, i.e. they can be stored on small CD of 8 cm.

; Damn Small Linux : also called DSL, one of the smallest distributions of GNU/Linux, ideal for the very old PC. Approximately 50 Mo. ; Damn Small Linux Not : also called DSL-N (“Damn Small Linux Not is Not Damn Small Linux! ”) a version of Damn Small Linux with an interface in GTK. Approximately 100 Mo. ; Shone Linux: aim at the facility of use, provides Xfce. Approximately 50 Mo. There exist two additional CD of less than 80 Mo each one. ; Multidistro: gather several compact distributions. Approximately 700 Mo. ; NimbleX: provides KDE, IceWM, Fluxbox, KOffice, KDEgames, applications for the multi-media one. See of Wikipedia English. Approximately 200 Mo. ; Puppy Linux : conceived to be light, reliable and easy to use while preserving the maximum of functionalities. Approximately 100 Mo. ; PureOSlight: French based on Debian with Xfce. Approximately 200 Mo. ; Slax: standard the Slax versions (192 Mo) and the version Slax Popcorn Edition (115 Mo) are compact. The Popcorn version contains much less options. ; SliTaz: with Administrative of windows, Navigator Web, customer HS, Web server. In French. Approximately 30 Mo.

; Ubuntu Studio: Multi-media directed Ubuntu: audio, video and graphic creation. ; APODIO: audio and video creation, CAM. ; Dynebolic: station of video assembly, illustration 2D and 3D, image processing. ; Garbure: 5 liveCDs specialized animation, page layout, video, music… ; Grafpup: graphic design, photography.

Education

; Edubuntu: Ubuntu planned for eduction. ; Eduknoppix: fact by Italian professors for pupils of college, based on Knoppix. ; Freeduc-Cd: resulting from Freeduc, a catalog of free software useful for education. ; Knosciences: resulting from a IUFM of the Meeting. ; Skolelinux: exist in version liveCD. ; So.Di.Linux: realized by an Italian university. Maintenance

; Avast! BART CD : commercial product, Antivirus and tools for recovery of data. Not based on Unix. ; Clonezilla: cloning of partition. See of Wikipedia English. ; Slax-LFI: cloning and partionnage. ; SystemRescueCd: compact distribution, recovery of data and maintenance. ; Windows EP: allowing to prepare the deployment of Windows. Product of Microsoft, not based on Unix.

Media center

These distributions are very light systems only intended for the multi-media reading. They make it possible to create a Media center if the computer is connected to a television and controlled by a remote control. They can read DVD, and the majority of the video and audio formats. They propose possibly the function of digital video recorder.

; GeeXboX: Media center, of the files multimedia can be added with the distribution on CD. ; Limp: media center, the name means Li nux m ultimedia p to bush-hammer. ; LinuxConsole: together of applications for the Multi-media reading (its, video, television), the Office automation and the Video game (emulators of game console).

Science

; Knoppix/Maths: mathematical applications. ; Scientific Linux : created by the Fermilab, CERN and various universities to reduce the dispersion of the efforts. Contains amongst other things R and Graphviz, manages the images FITS. See it on Wikipedia English. ; Paipix: scientific applications.

Safety

; Anonym.OS: anonymous and protected access for surfer on the Web. ; BackTrack: tools for the tests of safety of a network (Wardriving, tools Wifi S, etc). ; Vulnerable Damn Linux: together of tools for safety. ; INSERT: allows to make analysis network, and to recover data after a crash landing. It can read and write on partitions NTFS. The name means “ in side S ecurity R escue T oolkit”. ; Frenzy BSD : tests of the material and the filesystems, security checks, adjustments and analyzes of the functions network. Based on FreeBSD. ; NUbuntu: tools for the tests of safety network, based on Ubuntu. ; Network Security Toolkit : gather the best software on the safety of the networks. ; Pentoo: directed safety and network. ; PLD RescueCD : selection of tool for the restoration and the computer security. ; Vacarm Linux : envisaged for the audits of safety. ; Zeroshell: directed services network and safety.

Other

; Oralux: for people blind women or partially-sighted persons. Its user interface is based on Emacspeak, Yasr…

Inactive projects

The following liveCDs are not any more under development. The limit is one year without update or official statement. ; Antemium: by Antesis association. ; ClusterKnoppix: use a Noyau Linux modified (OpenMosix). ; DemoLinux: based on Debian, first liveCD . ; Flonix: Linux distribution on key USB. ; Freeduc-sup: envisaged for the structures of formations (college for example) post-vats in data processing and physics. ; Ging: based on Debian GNU/kFreeBSD: distribution Debian with a core FreeBSD. ; Gnoppix: amalgamated with Ubuntu. ; GnuLinEx: resulting from a project of the area of Estrémadure (Spain). ; Hikarunix: dedicated to the play of go, based on Damn Small Linux. ; Jollix: based on Gentoo. ; Kanotix: based on Debian. ; MoviX: media center, two projects distinct: direct film reading present on CD, or interfaces more traditional. ; OliveBSD: based on OpenBSD.
