Armorial bearings

Of mouths, with the crowned gold lion, holding in its legs a Danish axe of money also fixed of gold . The color of the weapons is known since 1220, date on which the saga of kings de Norvège (Heimskringla) was written.

The lion is used by the kings of Norway as a symbol since the reign of Magnus VI.

It is with its successor Erik II that one owes the addition of the crown and the axe.

Since, the royal armorial bearings underwent only light variations in their representation, the composition remaining the same one. In 1844, the royal weapons became also the national weapons.
