The current pattern off districts was introduced in 1974 throughout England and Wales, replacing year older system off Municipal borough S, Urban district S, Rural district S and County borough S.

In England, several exchanges cuts taken place, goal only within the framework created then. However in Wales the Welsh districts cuts off been replaced entirely with new unitary counties and county boroughs Wales.
