List counts then dukes of Maine

First counts

One mentions at the 8th century two counts, who would be related to the first Robertiens:
  • Roger , count of Mans quoted in 710 and 724.
  • Herve , wire of the precedent, count of Mans quoted in 748.

The Maine and Mans disappear then from the documents and charters to reappear only with the Rorgonides which are probably downward of Roger and Herve.

First house of Maine (Rorgonides)

  • 820 - 839: ''' Rorgon I {{er}} ''' († 839), count of Maine, and Rennes, wire of Gauzlin Ier of Maine.
  • 839 - 849: Gauzbert († 849), count of Maine, brother of the precedent.
  • 849 - 865: ''' Rorgon II ''' († 865), count of Maine, wire of Rorgon Ist
  • 865 - 878: Gauzfrid († 878), count of Maine, brother of the precedent, also marquis de Neustrie.
  • 878 - 885: Ragenold († 885)

To died of Gauzfrid, his/her son being too young to succeed to him, the county of Maine is given to Ragenold, a rorgonide of a branch junior, then Roger of Maine, is married with a Carolingian. Rorgonides turn then to the Robertiens and the county is disputed between the two families.

Second house of Maine (Hugonides)

  • 900 - 950: Hugues I {{er}} († 940), count of Maine, wire of Roger, it probably marries a girl of Gauzlin, putting fine at the litigation between the two families.

  • 950 - 992: ''' Hugues II ''' († 992), count of Maine, wire of Hugues Ier
  • 992 - 1015: ''' Hugues III ''' († 1015), count of Maine, wire of the precedent
  • 1015 - 1035: ''' Herbert I {{er}} '' Wake up-Dog ''''' († 1035), count of Maine, wire of the precedent
  • 1035 - 1051: ''' Hugues IV ''' († 1051), count of Maine, wire of the precedent. Married to Berthe, girl of Eudes II of Blois
  • 1051 - 1062: ''' Herbert II ''' († 1062), count of Maine, wire of the precedent
Without child, Herbert II indicates in his will William the Conqueror like his successor, but the lords of Maine revolt and call an uncle by alliance of Herbert II.

Fights of succession

William the Conqueror drives out Gautier and installs his son Robert Courteheuse as count.
  • 1063 - 1069: Robert Ier Courteheuse , wire of William the Conqueror, promised in marriage in 1063 to Marguerite of Maine († 1063), sister of Herbert II, titular count of Maine.

In 1069, the lords of Maine revolt and place on the seat comtal another descendant of the counts of Maine.

  • 1069 - 1093: Hugues V of Este († 1097), wire of Azzo II of Este and Gersende of Maine, grandson of the count Herbert Ier; sells the county to his/her cousin Elie de Beaugency in 1093.

  • 1093 - 1110: Élie Ier de Beaugency (death in 1110), wire of Lancelin de Beaugency, lord of the Arrow, and Paule of Maine, grandson of the count Herbert Ier
  • 1110 - 1126: Erembourg (1091-1126), girl of the precedent, married to Foulque V of Anjou

House of Anjou

  • 1109 - 1129: ''' Foulque Ier '' the Young person ''''', count d' Anjou then king de Jérusalem (1095 - 1143)
  • 1129 - 1151: ''' Geoffroy Ier '' Beautiful the '' or '' Plantagenêt ''''' (1113 - 1151)
  • 1151 - 1151: ''' Élie II of Maine ''', younger brother of Geoffroy Ier, dies the same year, a few months after his/her brother.
  • 1151 - 1189: ''' Henri Ier Plantagenêt ''', king d' Angleterre in 1154 (11331189)
  • 1156 - 1158: ''' Geoffroy II ''' (11341158), younger brother of Henri Ier, invested of Anjou and Maine by his/her brother, dies without posterity.
  • 1169 - 1183: ''' Henri II the Young person ''' (11551183), oldest son of Henri Ier Plantagenêt, invested of Anjou and Maine by his/her father, dies without posterity.
  • 1183 - 1199: ''' Richard Ier '' Lion-hearted ''''' (11571199), wire junior by Henri Ier, king d' Angleterre in 1189.
  • 1199 - 1204: ''' Jean Ier Without Ground ''' (11671219), fourth wire of Henri Ier, king d' Angleterre in 1199; dispossessed of Anjou and Maine by the king of France Philippe II Auguste in 1204.

  • Jean de France or Jean Tristan (1219 - † 1232), not reigning, wire of Louis VIII the Lion, invested of Anjou and Maine in 1226; dies without posterity.

  • 1246 - 1285: ''' Charles Ier ''' (12261285), also king de Sicile, then of Naples, brother of the precedent
  • 1285 - 1290: ''' Charles II ''' (12541309), king of Naples, wire of the precedent; in 1290, it gives Anjou and Maine in dowry to his/her daughter who marries Charles III of Valois
  • 1290 - 1299: ''' Marguerite ''' (12731299), girl of the precedent, married to Charles III of Valois
  • 1290 - 1325: ''' Charles III of Valois ''' 12701325), wire of Philippe III, king de France
  • 1325 - 1328: ''' Philippe de Valois ''' (1293 - 1350), wire of the precedents. In 1328, Philippe de Valois becomes king de France ( Philippe VI ) and attaches Anjou and Maine to France
