List counts then dukes of Alsace

The duchy of Alsace is created by the kings of Austrasie in 640. It is removed in 754 and is replaced by two counties: the Nordgau ( country of north , roughly the the Low-Rhine) and the Sundgau ( country of the south , roughly the Haut-Rhin).

Two wire of Adalric Ier, duke of Alsace, will receive the two counties then:

  • Adalbert Ier and its descendants will be counts of Sundgau;
  • Ethicon II and its descendants will be counts of Nordgau.

With the disappearance of the branch resulting from Adalbert Ier, the descendants of Ethicon II take again the title of counts d' Alsace.
