List counts of Metz

There were with Metz various counts:

  • initially the royal counts thus named because they were named by the king of the Francs, then the Germanie king,
  • then, the bishops of Metz named counts charged to manage their business. These counts are appointed commes Count Palatines , who exert at the same time as the royal counts.
  • finally, at the 11th century, the influence of the Germanic emperor, heir to kings de Germanie, moves away, the royal counts become dukes of Lorraine and the bishops receive the temporal power, which they entrust to their Count Palatines. Those become episcopal counts .

  • 842 - 862: Bivin de Gorze , abbot of Gorze, would have been count de Metz

  • ??? - 910: Gerard I {{er}} († 910), married to Oda of Saxony, widow of Zwentibold, king de Lotharingie
  • 926 - 930: Matfried I {{er}} († 930), brother of the precedent, married to Lantsint
  • 930 - 944: Adalbert I {{er}} († 944), wire of the precedent, married to Luitgarde, girl of Wigéric de Bidgau
  • 944 - 963: Gerard II, grandson of Gerard Ier, wire of Godefroy of Low-Lotharingie, and Ermentrude girl of Charles Simple the
  • 963 - 982: Richard, probably wire of Gerard II
  • 982 - 1022: Gerard III († 1022), wire of the precedent, married to Eva, girl of Sigefroy, count de Luxembourg
  • 1022 - 1033: Adalbert II († 1033), wire of the precedent, married towards 979 in Judith
  • 1033 - 1045: Gerard IV († 1045), brother of the precedent, married to Gisele
  • 1045 - 1047: Adalbert III († 1048), wire of the precedent. It becomes duke of Lorraine in 1047.
  • 1047 - 1070: Gerard V († 1070), brother of the precedent. He becomes also duke of Lorraine with died of his brother.
To the wire of time, the temporal power of the county of Metz passes more and more to the bishop of Metz.

  • 995 - 1029: Folmar II († 1029), wire of the precedent

  • : married to Gerberge, probable girl of Godefroy Ier the prisoner, count de Verdun and of Oda of Metz (girl of Gerard Ier, royal count)
  • 1056 - 1075: Folmar III († 1075), wire of the precedent

  • : married to Swanechilde

Episcopal counts

  • 1075 - 1111: Folmar IV († 1111), wire of the precedent
  • 1111 - 1145: Folmar V († 1145), wire of the precedent

  • : married to Mathilde, girl of Albert Ier, count d' Eguisheim, of Dagsbourg and Nordgau
  • 1145 - 1159: Hugues I {{er}} († 1159), wire of the precedent

  • 1145 - 1171: Folmar VI († 1171), brother of the precedent

  • : With his death without direct heir, the bishop gives the county of Metz to another family. The new count is first cousin of the preceding count, because he is grandson of Albert Ier d' Eguisheim

  • 1171 - 1178: Hugues II († 1178), also count d' Eguisheim, of Dagsbourg ( Hugues X ), wire of Hugues IX, count d' Eguisheim, of Dagsbourg

  • : married to Luitgarde de Sulzbach
  • 1178 - 1212: Albert († 1212), wire of the precedent

  • : married to Gertrude de Bade
  • 1212 - 1225: Gertrude († 1225), girl of the precedent

  • : married in first weddings in 1206 with Thiébaud I {{er}} († 1219), duke of Lorraine
  • : married in second weddings in 1220 with Thibaut IV, count de Champagne (cancellation of the marriage in 1222)
  • : married in third weddings with Simon of Saarbrucken

To his death, the bishop of Metz attaches the county to the episcopal field.
