Younger brother of Baudouin VI. Its marriage in 1063 with Gertrude of Saxony, widow of Florent Ier of Holland, gave him the government of this territory during the minority of Thierry V of Holland. In 1071 it dispossessed of the Flanders its nephew Arnoul III of Flanders which was killed with the battle of Cassel.

Wire of Louis of Nevers, which was the oldest son of Robert de Béthune. He married in 1320 Marguerite de France (8 years), girl of Philippe Length. He inherited his mother, in 1325, of the county of Réthel. He was killed on August 25th, 1346 with the Bataille of Crécy.

His/her daughter, Marguerite de Maele, widow of Philippe de Rouvres in 1361, married in 1369 Philippe Bold the, which had received from his/her father, the king of France Jean II the Good, in 1363, the Duché of Burgundy.
