List counts de Tocqueville
Seigniory then county of Tocqueville
The seigniory of Tocqueville was created between 1400 and 1500. It is the cradle of the family of Tocqueville (has not to confuse with the Clerel family which is made call Clerel de Tocqueville) and is located on the current commune of Tocqueville-the-Walls. (This commune was called Tocqueville until 1962 but it was renamed Tocqueville-the-Walls, because 3 cities carried the name of Tocqueville in Seine-Maritime and 5 on all Normandy. The 2 other towns of Seine-Maritime named Tocqueville (has to know Tocqueville-in-Caux and Tocqueville-on-Have) were created from the original city of Tocqueville.)
Several lords of Tocqueville followed one another in Normandy, until the sale in 1693 of this seigniory (a ground of 70 acres (28 hectares)) around the foundations of the castle of Tocqueville by Adrien de Tocqueville, his/her brothers and his mother. The family settles then in the manor of Royville, unfortunately devastated by a fire towards 1800. Pierre Victor de Tocqueville points out himself by his military actions at the time of the Napoleonean Wars. He is even made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by Napoleon on the battle field. He is made count in April 1815 to have followed Louis XVIII in exile to Ghent, whereas nothing let predict the return of the king. His/her son is also soldier. Its grandson Robert Victor de Tocqueville adopts his cousin Pierre Grouard so that the title of count de Tocqueville continuous. It is today the family Grouard de Tocqueville which carries the title.
