List counts de Bigorre

Constitution of the county of Bigorre

The King de France Charles the Bald person accepts in 840 the charter of constitution of the Comté of Bigorre to the profit of Donat-Wolf of Bigorre, which is the first to carry the title of count de Bigorre.

The membership of the counts de Bigorre to the line of the kings de France Mérovingiens by the male branch of the dukes of Aquitaine is an imagination based on the charter of Allaon, notorious forgery the XVIIe century.

Probable is the membership of the counts de Bigorre to the line of the dukes of Gascogne and the counts de Navarre and Aragon, the latter having privileged since IXe century the marriages of alliances with the counties of Béarn, Foix, Bigorre and duchy of Gascogne.

Succession of the county of Bigorre

The succession of the county of Bigorre is delicate, of many applicants claims it. Pétronille defends the rights of his/her daughter Alix de Montfort on the county of Bigorre which becomes English. To put a term at the wars of succession, the crown of France grants the county before restoring it with the English with the Traité of Brétigny in 1360. It makes return to Bernard of Armagnac in 1407 in which Jean Ier count de Foix-Grailly repurchases it. This one will carry starting from this date the title of count de Bigorre.
