In exchange of the assistance of France for the unification of Italy, Victor-Emmanuel II yields Savoy and the county of Nice which are annexed in France, following the treated of Turin. Victor-Emmanuel II ceased carrying the title of Duke of Savoy as from the Traité of March 24th, 1860 relating to the Annexation of Savoy. Article 2 of this treaty specifies that Victor-Emmanuel II gives up for him and all its descendants and successors with its rights and titles on Savoy. Its successors, the kings Humbert Ier, Victor-Emmanuel III and Humbert II all were illegally titrated dukes of Savoy. This title is currently illegally carried by S.A.R. the prince Victor-Emmanuel of Savoy.
