Listed countries

Many publications give a list of the countries of the world, but they do not use all the same criteria to include or not a country. A criterion very current is the international recognition of the country.

To the generally recognized countries Taiwan is often added, with however a warning on the nonofficial character of the list or on the fact that Taiwan is not recognized.

The islands Cook and Nioué, which concluded a Compact of Free Association with the New Zealand, appear in certain lists of country, but not all. These the last two countries can be prevailed of the clause “all the States” defined by the Convention of Vienna on the diplomatic relations (1961). The lists of country contain sometimes also part of the Liste of the dependences and territories with special sovereignty, where in particular the islands Cook and Nioué appear.

Four countries are recognized by at least another country without being recognized by UNO: the Arab Republic sahraouie democratic, the Palestine, Taiwan and the Turkish Republic of Cyprus of North.

Finally certain territories independent but or are recognized, and generally not listed very little. It is for example the case of the Moldavian République of Transnistrie.

Short and long form

The majority of the countries have two names: the “short form” and the “long form”.

The short form is the usual name, for example “France”. It is most largely used in the everyday life like in teaching and the Cartographie. , etc It can also be used in the title of the cartographic publications.
