Agriculture and industries

Agriculture

Briefly let us point out the various modes of hiring:
  • the farmer rented the grounds for a “firm” price, whether harvests are good or bad.
  • the censier paid his hiring in the form of “rendages”, that is to say a percentage of the incomes of its work.

Various censiers

In 1770, are mentioned several other censiers, but without knowing of who they held their grounds:
  • Joseph Corsin
  • Mr. Grebert
  • Mr. the president Turpin
  • Antoine Duthoit cultivated a ground with ploughing of 14 hundreds leased
We also find the ground and supposed of Quiquempois. The seigniory and supposed of Quiquempois was located at Flers. François Ferdinand, count de Lannoy and of Year (1732-?) was the last lord of Quiquempois.

New agricultural buildings start to appear:

  • In 1733, the Hennion farm with the angle of the Roger-Salengro streets and Chanzy whose date of construction was reproduced on the gate.
  • the Duthoit farm, with the angle of the streets Alfred-Delattre and Roger-Salengro.
  • In 1779, the Dordin farm with the angle of the Chanzy streets and Roger-Salengro (veterinary).
  • the Dupont farm.

The July 13rd 1788, little before midday, a tornado sweeps the Belgium and the France, of Brussels to Tours. The priest of Cateau noted in the register of catholicity that, because of falls of hail, all the panes exposed to the west were broken, the torn off roofs, the completely devastated harvests. Another chronicler also evoked this tornado: let us hail, large like nuts and the shape of a shuttle of tisserands struck hares, makes a hecatomb of birds. Charente with the the Scheldt, the corns and rye were chopped. The Poitou, the Picardy, the Touraine, the Beauce and the Chartres-native country disappeared under cloudburst; eighteen parishes around Lille were seriously damaged. The harvest of grains, after the floods of spring, the followed canicular estival dryness hailstorms, was, by far, insufficient. In January 1789, snow falls for two months without interruption. In March 1789, the people revolt, the harvest of 1788 is practically exhausted.

Development of the Northern network
The first railroads of North are built by the company of Anzin which moves on rail of the coal tip trucks as of 1811. In 1833, engineer Paul Cartiau proposes to use the force of the vapor, as that was already made with the the United Kingdom since 1804.

The August 11th 1842, a first convoy Belgian starts from Mouscron towards Lille. At that time, one fears the commercial relations with the Belgium (with the area inhabitant of Lille) of which the railway network strongly more is developed. The public opinion claims the creation of the line Paris - Lille.

In July 1843, the public Minister for Labor accepts the principle of a Paris-Lille connection by the rail. The Company of North, formed by the Rothschild family, is declared contractor of the line. She refuses that Paris-Lille crosses the fortifications inhabitants of Lille, which will not prevent the festival during the official unveiling, the June 14th 1846. The railroad becomes the feeder cord of the agglomeration (flax, spinning mills, hosiery…). It will be necessary nearly one half-century to harmonize the station of Lille with the importance of its traffic.

By the law of the July 26th 1844, the railroad of Paris towards the the United Kingdom is directed on Calais and Dunkirk. Boulogne will be served by Amiens until in 1867, date of the construction of the Boulogne-Calais section. Paris-Calais will pass by Lille. The structure of the network is already well drawn during the creation of the Company of the railroads of North (July 9th 1845).

The first hard Lille-Paris voyage 14 hours (May 4th 1846). The Company of North amalgamates with that of Creil to Saint-Quentin in 1847, then with that from Amiens in Boulogne in 1851.

In 1856, an international service with through carriages in first class opens between Brussels and Calais bound for London, with a stop in Lille. In 1860, the section Lens - Forest gives to Lille an access on the coal basin of the Pas-de-Calais. The following year, the section Lens- Béthune finishes the line known as “of the Collieries”.

In June 1870, the hot line Lille Valencian is opened with the exploitation. Valencians is connected to Aulnoye in September 1872: Lille thus obtains an direct access with the Lorraine field and the establishment metallurgical of the the Ardennes. July 1st 1876, one opens the line Lille Based the. It will be prolonged until Saint-pol. on Ternoise, Abbeville and Tréport between 1875 and 1881.

The development in cross of the network makes of Lille a strategic city, and the area inhabitant of Lille, the transport route of the anglo-Rhenish traffic. It is this network which the Company of North bequeaths to the SNCF in 1938. The profile of the network of North, definite before 1900, will remain the same one until the electrification, in 1955.

On this occasion, the traditional speech was made by Mr. Lhopitalier, engineer principal. In 1957, the workshops undertake their reconversion which must lead them to revise two hundred electric machines per annum in 1970.

Since January 1999, the EIMM has as essential tasks: changes of parts, repairs following accidents, visits general, operations of esthetic comfort.

Its missions integrate:

The textile

Before the Revolution of 1789, the work of the Wool, initially only family acivity, is directed towards the craft industry. The rural ones, during the winter, weave the wool yarn manufactured with the Quenouille or the family wheel. This second activity is an element of stability of the incomes. Truths craftsmen follow which live only of their work, then the traders. Those buy wool and cotton, make them spin the winter by the small craftsman or the farmer. The products are sold at spring.
La Révolution makes us pass from the trader to the contractor. The traders had been able to manage at the beginning of the 19th century to acquire the capital necessary to the upheaval of the production structure of the textile.
Les important technical innovations increases the productivity as of 1800. The wheel is competed with by Mull Jenny which carries thirty pins. The steam engine makes its appearance in North towards 1820. The traders transform themselves then into contractors.

The Delebart company had been created in Fives. It counted 220 workmen in 1860. The factory was built in 1898 by the British group The Fine Knitting machine Spinners and Doublers which will enter later three years the capital of Delebart-Mallet. In 1840 was born in Lille a factory from construction from machines rested by Pierre Delebart. He will marry a girl Mallet (who had created a cotton-spinning in 1830) which, in partnership with Vantroyen was owner in Lille of a cotton-spinning. In 1856, the cotton shakers of Lille and its suburbs were intended to impose their conditions on their owners. Indeed, in times of crisis, the wages decreased because the industrialists reduced the rate of them, and especially the number of work hours, arrived sometimes at complete unemployment. When the economic conjuncture was good, the labor was required. Thus, with regard to the beaters of Vantroyen, the conciliation boards named an expert, the industrialist Thiriez, of which the conclusions were unfavourable to the workmen who, déboutés, took again their booklets and were made engage at Flament-Courbon in Lille. In 1842, Pierre Delebart joins Henri Lardemer to open two new workshops; association is broken in 1853. Delebart-Mallet repurchases in 1880 the spinning mill of his/her brothers-in-law, establishes a new factory with Mons-in-Barœul in 1914, absorbs the Brabant-Vandier spinning mill of Loos in 1920. At that time, Delebart-Mallet is with the fact of its power (200 000 pins). The great stir of the textile sector of 1961 was going to change all gives it. In 1964, the group Fine Knitting machine Spinners and Doublers, which had already taken the total control of Delebart-Mallet, is in its turn absorptive by Courtaulds. Three units of the group including/understanding Hellemmes, Loos and Douai its joined together under Delebart-Mallet company name. The company hellemmoise is included/understood in a conglomerate of companies controlled by Philippe Meillassoux, who directs moreover Mossley-Sartel (in Lome), Virolois limited liability company in Tourcoing, that is to say a whole of 36 companies linked by various bonds (direct participation or agreement of union). The Mossley group seems to be directed towards clothing, and delocalizes some of its companies in South Africa (Mossley Natal) and in Turkey (Mossley Adana).

Lorent-Lescornez spinning mill

In 1880, Victor Lorent established on Hellemmes a treatment plant of wire of flax for weaving. From its heat with work, the establishment develops quickly, extending to the wire from hemp for thread-making factory and rope manufacture like with combed packing. Ambition of Victor Lorent: to manufacture perfect products. With this intention, it joins in 1898 Paul Dufour. A spinning mill employing 300 workmen is then established street Sailor-hat.

In January 1906, a fire bursts and extends on 2.500 m ², caused, seems it, by a Court-circuit. the Echo of North summarizes the disaster thus: “A flame reddens the one morning old shade of winter, it grows with a fantastic speed. Six hundred workmen are shaken by fear, the blazing inferno forms an imposing spectacle of terror. ” The damage is important: 150.000 francs for the buildings, 750.000 francs for the goods. The unit spinning mill, partly financed by the insurances is rebuilt street Sadi-Carnot (street Roger-Salengro).

Died of Victor Lorent in 1913, Paul Dufour joins her cousin Eugene Dufour. At the beginning of the First World War, the company counts 700 workmen and uses 1.800 horses on a surface of 4,5 hectares (7 in 1935). During the conflict, the occupant empties the factory of his material, but the activities can begin again as of 1919. Meanwhile, the company increased by the purchase of the factory of the Large Mill with Amilly (Loiret) where a twist mill is installed.

As of the recovery, a steam engine turns, a first trade prepares the flax for the spinning mill. In 1933, one counted 11.132 pins with dryness, classifying the company with the third regional rank.

The Second world war brings its quota of misfortunes: bombardments, flights of copper, difficulties of provisioning. Most of the material of production is requisitioned then sent in Germany. In spite of the difficulties, the direction of the factory reviews honor to maintain would be this only one minimum of activity.

In 1951, 1050 workmen and frameworks work on the site, but comes the recession. In 1968, the Paul company and Eugene Dufour is known as technically without industrial activity. Initially, it receives assets brought in of nine other companies, thus making pass its capital from 1 to 99 franc million. The following year, eight other companies join the group of which Gratry and Crespel.

The capital of the textile general Consortium was carried out in its first study, i.e. the legal constitution before reorganization by the Willot group. But the factory did not exist any more but on paper, having become the seat, very provisional, of what will become the Agache-Willot group. Currently, the building is occupied by the White butterflies.

The same applies in all the spinning mills (in June 1861, Delsalle lowers the wages of 5%). Spinning mill of flax and packing established on Hellemmes in 1870. The Ravet-Anceau directories

Victor Ravet, not succeeding in the businesses, occupied only one modest employment at the station of Lille in 1847. Candidate with the constituent Assembly, it obtains only very little voice, May his profession of faith - and its club of the Friends of the People - attracts the curious ones. In 1849, it announces the creation of the Bank of the People which hardly have success. In 1851, we find it as writer of the various facts and the agricultural meetings to the Messager of North .

It does not seem to be worried following its protests against the coup d'etat (December 4th 1851). After a large work of investigation, it launches as of 1853 its directory of Lille and its district which will appear then annually. Pierre Nickel silver father, of Lorraine origin, had chosen expatrier to escape the German occupation from 1870. Taken refuge with Antwerp (Belgium), it founds a company of export and maritime transport. It is in 1896 that it settles in Lille where among its many functions, it is named Consul of Belgium. In partnership with Xavier Battet, it buys in Victor Ravet the already famous Ravet-Anceau . The first directory, of 1853, included/understood four hundred pages. Pierre Melchior wire develops the directory in four volumes with charts, covering North and the Pas-de-Calais, is a whole of fifteen thousand pages. It is in 1959 that the company settles in the offices of the old Dufour spinning mill, street Roger-Salengro. In 1967, the clouds start to obscure the family company. Competition becomes very hard with the appearance, inter alia, of the famous yellow pages of the phone book, and the Havas directories.

The transfer with American Dun & Bradstreet, in partnership with the Bank Scalbert, becomes inevitable in 1973, although the former owner remains director. Ten years later, the bulky volumes are replaced by sixteen smaller directories. The American disillusions and resells the company with Stephan Maillard who transferred it, a few years ago, with Villeneuve-with Ascq.

Brewery the Sower

In 1877, two brewers are announced on the territory of Hellemmes: Auguste Desnoulez (street Faidherbe) and Cavrois-Vanderstraeten (street Roger-Salengro). However, there were to be others, each bar of them, practically, manufactured its artisanal beer. The February 9th 1866, a request for construction of brewery is deposited in prefecture by Vanderstraeten. In 1888, Alexis Lefebvre takes again the company (the prefecture requires of him to justify of its authorization to brew by mail of August 9th 1891). In 1922, the brewery Lefebvre-Verse amalgamates with the brewery Dupont-Lefer malt factory installed in Lille (Saint-Maurice). First of all, the company takes the company name of “the Gallic one”, but changes quickly (without the reason being known of the public) for that of “the Sower”. After the First World War (approximately 1928), the methods of production changes (especially in Alsace, Czechoslovakia, etc), the Sower must pass to an industrial production. A new construction will include remainders of the old farm according to the project drawn up by the cabinet of industrial architecture E. Tampan of Roubaix (see the similarity of buildings of industrial use being on Roubaix with the Sower). Between 1949 and 1952, new constructions and transformations come to be added, on plans of the Arcadet architect:
  • 1955 : the tower is elevated of three stages.
  • 1960 : construction of a building with framework concrete with a vast basement.
  • 1965 : construction of a building identical to the angle of the streets Gambetta and Roger-Salengro.
  • 1971 : acquisition of the old stewardship of the SNCF enters the streets Joseph-Bara and Marc-Séguin place, construction of two hangars to the angle of the Voltaire streets and Ferdinand-Mathias (appendix known as “Union”).
In 1985, a general reform of the industry of mixing starts. Jacques François Bonduelle (who had been general president-director of Pelforth and of the Pélican before these marks are not taken again by Heineken, had already repurchased three other breweries with Solesmes (Solesmes SA) with Denain and Avesnes-on-Helpe to form JFB Brasseries, takes again the Sower. In 1988, the Saint-Arnould group increases by taking again the Sower who is consequently condemned. This retrocession would have been done without the knowledge of Dupont (majority in SA, but, according to the rumor, another problem would have arisen: one of the joint shareholders would have wished “to take again its balls”.

Closed down soon, part of the buildings is demolished partly to leave the place to the trade “Penny Market”, whereas the ground floor of the tower is occupied by the trade “Eldy”.

The hangar (as well as the court) ranging between the streets Joseph-Bara, Vanderstraeten and Ferdinand-Mathias was taken again by the company “Trocante”. The hangar ranging between the streets F. - Mathias, Paul-Bert, Voltaire and Salembier were acquired by Mr. Debruyne, carriage-builder. The potential currently remaining represents 2.400 m ² livable, of the garages in basement and a room of approximately 800 m ² in basement. The reconversion of this waste land represents for Mr. Vandemorteele a project with average expiry.
