List classes of Russian and Soviet submarines

The Sous-marin S of the Soviet Marine then of the Russian Marine were conceived with numbers of project, and sometimes received a name. During the Cold war, the nations of NATO called these ships according to their codes NATO, according to reports/ratios of information.

Codes NATO used the British tradition (then American) to name the submarines with a letter of the alphabet indicating the class, then a serial number of this class. The names use the codes of the Phonetic alphabet of NATO. For safety reasons, the numbers of hull of the Soviet submarines were not allotted in the order.

The majority of the Russian and Soviet submarines did not have an individual name, but only one number and a prefix made up of letter identifying the type of ship, beyond the class. These letters included:

  • К (K) — крейсерская ( kreyserskaya , “cruiser”)

  • ТК (TK) — тяжелаякрейсерская ( tyazholaya kreyserskaya , “heavy cruiser”)
  • Б (B) — большая ( bolshaya , “large”)
  • С (S) — средняя ( srednyaja , “means”)
  • М (M) — малая ( malaya , “small”)

These préfices could have C (S) addition at the end, for специальная ( spetsialnaya ) and meaning “conceived for special missions. ”
