Évêché d' Alais

Évêché of Went was created by dismemberment of the évêché of fine Nimes of the XVIIe century.

Alais was conquered on the Protestants by Louis XIII in 1629 and, in order to consolidate the catholic faith in and with the accesses of the the Cevennes, Louis XIV and the bishop of Nimes Esprit Arrow-maker, took the initiative of the foundation of this évêché. Erection was made by a bubble of the pope Innocent XII, on May 17th 1694.

The diocese of Went was limited to north by the diocese of Mende, to the east by the diocese of Uzès, in the south, by the diocese of Nimes and Montpellier and, in the west, by the dioceses of Lodève, Vabres and Rodez.

Évêché had a transitory existence since it was removed in 1790 by the Assembly constituent, and attached to that of Avignon. In 1821, Alais was again attached to the diocese of Nimes, which had just been restored. The bishop of Nimes carries the titles of Went and Uzès.
