In the last movement, the human voice appears for the first time. Beethoven adds a chorus and a vocal quartet which sing the Hymne with the joy , a poem of Friedrich von Schiller. This work calls with the love and became a symbol of peace and fraternity between all the men, the nations and the people of the world. Many orchestras play this work traditionally with each new year day before, underlining the capacity symbolic system of the symphony.
During Olympic Games of 1956 and 1964, the first verse of the last movement was the common anthem of the the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic republic.
