Lirou (affluent of Orb)

Principal affluents

Lirou takes its source with the foot of the Montmajou , upstream of Cébazan. This river was born from the meeting of two brooks: the brook of Gragnos, which takes its source towards Villespassans, and the brook of Bridge-of-Brabet. The affluents of Lirou are (upstream towards the downstream):

Department and cities crossed

Located in the west of the Herault: it takes its source beside Villespassans, it is joined by multiple affluents which are only brooks, and carries on its road towards Puisserguier and Maureilhan and is thrown in the Orb with Béziers with the foot of the Old Bridge and the cathedral Saint Nazaire.

Hydrology

Lirou has a mode of wadi: dry in summer period, it can know risings in autumn and sometimes in spring. To height of Puisserguier, it can leave its bed and flood dwellings.

Trade union of Lirou

The maintenance of the basin of Lirou and its bed was entrusted to Intercommunity association Installation of Lirou made up of personalities indicated by the various municipal councils of the communes concerned with the river.

Chronic pollution

Lirou knows frequent pollution, causing many damage on the level of fauna and flora. Because of its mode of wadi, with a chronic lack of water in summer period, it is enough to small quantities poured of toxic products (resulting from the vine growing, people malevolent, rejections of purification plant - in particular that of Puisserguier which arrives to saturation, or of accidental origin) to cause serious damage on the ecosystem of this affluent of Orb. The current location of Lirou is comparable with that of the Calavon, river of the Vaucluse, in the Eighties.

Four purification plants are located in the basin of Lirou: of upstream downstream, Cébazan, Creissan (on a brook flow), Puisserguier (of which the station arrives to saturation) and Maureilhan.
