Lippe (department)

The Lippe is old a French Département of 1811 to 1814 and whose chief town was Münster, today located in Germany. It draws its name from the river Lippe.

It was formed the April 27th 1811 following the annexation of the northern part of the Grand-duché of Berg in December 1810. Indeed, the detached districts of Berg, initially attached to existing departments (with the Yssel-Superior for the arrondissemnts of Rees and Munster, with the Ems-Westerner for that of Neuhaus, and with the Mouth-with-the Yssel for that of Steinfurt), were joined together to form this new department.

After the fall of, the department was divided between the kingdoms of Prussia and Hanover.

  • district of Neuhaus: Bad Bentheim, Heede, Neuhaus, Nordhorn and Wesuwe.
  • district of Rees: Bocholt, Borken, Emmerich, Rees, Ringenberg and Stadtlohn.
  • district of Steinfurt: Ahaus, Billerbeck, Coesfeld, Ochtrup, Rheine and Steinfurt.
