Lioux is a common French, located in the department of Vaucluse and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Geography

Lioux is a small village in the north of Apt and the southern foot of the plates of the Monts of Vaucluse. The village belongs to the perimeter of the Regional natural park of Luberon.

The village is with the foot of “cliff of the Madeleine” (directed north-eastern/south-western).

The village of Joucas is to 7 km, Murs is to 9 km, Roussillon to 9 km Saint-Saturnin-the-Apt to 10 km and Gordes to 11 km.

Relief

The territory of the commune is characterized by strong foothills of forests and wood between which the brooks clear a passage in the combes (Cigalière, Vaumale, etc).

The element of the most outstanding relief of the commune is the cliff of the Madeleine who being itself on one kilometer length for approximately 100 meters in height. There exist other cliffs on the commune along large the combe of Lioux.

Geology

The formation of cliff of the Madeleine would go back to approximately 30 million years.

History

Cité in 960: “Leuca”, with 12th: “Leu”, then “Lhieous” and finally “Lueux” at the 14th century. The last version of its name would be derived from the word wolf, animals very present at the Moyen-âge in the area.

Hannibal (and its elephants) passed by Lioux to gain the road of the Alps, constrained to circumvent Marseilles. This is why the elephant is present on the armorial bearings of the city.

Property of the bishop of Carpentras at the 16th century.

At the beginning of XVIe century, the north of the current territory, whose Javon, is yielded to Baroncelli (become since Baroncelli-Javon) then which belonged to the Comtat Venaissin.

At the 20th century, the castle of Javon is bought by André Vayson de Pradenne.

The August 4th 1978, the castle of Javon is registered like Historic building.
