Lionel Walter Rothschild (second baron de Rothschild), born the February 8th 1868 and dead the August 27th 1937, is a banker and a British zoologist .

Biography

He makes his studies with the Magdalene College of Cambridge before joining the family bank with London where he will work there of 1889 with 1908.

Its true passion is the Zoologie and in particular the collection of Oiseau X and butterflies. It finances many forwardings throughout the world to enrich its collections and publishes very many articles of Taxinomie.

It founds its own natural history museum of Natural history close to its house of Tring Park in the Hertfordshire (Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum). This one is opened with the public starting from 1892. In 1932, it is forced to off sell part of its collection of birds with the American Museum Natural History of New York, partly because of a blackmail of which it is victim. In 1936, it gives the remainder of its collections to the British Museum. Today, the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum of Tring is a department of the Natural History Museum of London.

He takes an active part in the movement Zionist and is close to Chaim Weizmann.

Walter Rothschild with the reputation to be an eccentric, it keeps thus Kangourou S in his garden and its attachment is drawn by Zèbre S.
