Lionel Hampton

Lionel Hampton is a Vibraphoniste of Jazz and American Percussionniste born with Louisville, Kentucky, the April 20th 1908 and died in New York the August 31st 2002 at 94 years.

Called “Hamp”, he was the first jazzman to give his noble letters to the Vibraphone while propelling it as an instrument soloist. He is also a virtuoso of the piano and battery.

Biography

In 1930, it meets Louis Armstrong with which it records the first solo of vibraphone of the history of the jazz.

In 1936, it is engaged in the quartet of the famous clarinettist Benny Goodman, with whom it records his first discs.

Between 1937 and 1940, it records many excellent discs with small formations of studio.

In 1940, it founds its own training which is an immediate success and becomes one of most famous the big band of the time, where occur Quincy Jones, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon and Charles Mingus. Then it left during 3 years to England

After its death in 2002, André Waignein composes Tribute to Lionel with the Memory of Hampton, part for Orchestre of Harmony and Solo vibraphone.
