Lionel is in the youngest Légende arthurienne wire of King Bohort of Gaunes, the brother of Bohort Essilié and the cousin of Lancelot and Hector of the Ponds. Collected at the same time as his cousin by the Dame of the Lake he becomes knight of the Roundtable. Lionel with the bad luck to be victim twice of cruel scourgings. First once, still young man and travelling in company of Lancelot, it is captured by Lord Turquin, a bad knight who locks up it in a keep after having beaten it with thorny branches. During this Lionel episode will appear unworthy of the Graal since it goes as far as trying to kill his own brother by revenge, while Bohort proves on the contrary, while renonçant to use of violence against his brother to even defend his life, that it is worthy to reach Graal.
Thereafter, Lionel, just like its brother, will follow Lancelot in exile after the revelation of the culprit connection of this last with Guenièvre. Become King of Gaunes, Lionel takes part in the combat delivered by Lancelot against the forces of Arthur, then at the sides of Arthur against Mordred. It is during the battle delivered in Brittany against the remainder of the army of Mordred that it is killed by Melehan, wire of Mordred. Its death will be finally avenged by Bohort.
