Linux Standard Bases

See also: LSB

The Linux Standard Bases (Acronyme: LSB ) is a project joined per number of distributions Linux under the organisational structure of the Free Standards Group in order to conceive and standardize the internal structure of the operating systems based on GNU/Linux. The LSB is based on the specifications POSIX, the “single specification of UNIX”, like on other many open standards, but extends it in certain fields.

According to them:

“the goal of the LSB is to develop and promote a whole of standards which will increase compatibility between the various Linux distributions and will make it possible the applications to be carried out on any system in conformity with the LSB. Moreover, the LSB will help to coordinate the efforts of the salesmen of software to carry and carry out products for Linux. ”

Conformity with the LSB for a product must be certified by a procedure. The realization of the latter belongs to the Open Group in co-operation with Free Standards Group.

The LSB specifies for example:

  • a whole of libraries standards,
  • a number of orders and utilities which extend standard POSIX,
  • the structure of the hierarchy of the Filesystem,
  • different the run levels,
  • and several extensions to X Window System.

Criticisms

The LSB was criticized for its lack of consideration of the projects other than those of its members, in particular by the distribution Debian. For example, the LSB specifies that the packages (systems of installation of software) must be with the format RPM, which was invented well after the format deb.. The developers of Debian will not give up this specific format only they (and that others) regard as superior.

The standard does not dictate which format of package the operating system must use, but simply which format of package must be compatible - and this, in order to make the packages of any distribution usable by the systems in conformity.

Debian includes an optional support for the LSB and the informed user can use the program Alien to convert and install packages RPM in the format of native package. Ulrich Drepper criticized the LSB as for the insufficient tests, which can cause an incompatibility between various certified distributions.

On other points work LSB less is discussed, and received with gratitude.
