Linguistic immersion

The immersion indicates, in Linguistique, a teaching practice used either for the linguistic training of a language second, i.e. a new language for the individual, or the conservation of an already acquired language (threatened native tongue, for example, because very minority). For its users it is the best technique to acquire to maintain a real practice of the new language or it if it is a native tongue. It is carried out within the framework of a language teaching concerned in the majority of the matters and with a suitable school environment.

It is thus used primarily in two specific cases, from which the finalities are thus rather distinct:

  • or it is used like a method to acquire the control of a language second, this must allow that the registered children become bilingual, i.e. they can be usually expressed in this language second in addition to their native tongue (method used with the Canada; in the French Community of Belgium; etc);

  • or for the speakers of a minority regional language wishing to preserve the practice of their native tongue or to find it (Corsican, Alsatian, etc). It is particularly used by the Breton schools Diwan, the Basque schools or Ikastola S of association Seaska, Catalan women Bressola, to still obtain there a real Bilinguisme and to ensure a true regional language teaching, by creating qualified speakers at the same time in the official language (in France: French) and the minority language (for example the occitan).

In a French context, the enemies of this teaching practice meet among partisans of the Monolinguisme on all the territory of the Republic and the " holding of the Jacobinism culturel". They are however defenders of this practice for the benefit of French in the French educational establishment through the planet (eg: the Alliance Fran1caise).

Although declared “nonconstitutional” at the time of the attempt at integration of the Diwan schools in state education in France, this method is used by the French State to abroad teach French in the establishments dependant on the the Alliance Fran1caise, the minister of education subsidizing and/or placing at the disposal of the officials on secondment.

Elsewhere, in particular in other French-speaking countries, she is regarded as a teaching asset and meets few oppositions.
