Linguicide
The linguicide is the act to kill a Langue. The term is used inter alia by Claude Hagège in his work Halte with died of the languages , 2001. It is a particular form of Ethnocide.
There are two forms of linguicides reconnues :
- that which consists for an individual, not to transmit its language to his/her children, for various personal reasons, which can have effects if this practice is adopted by a great number (case of the dialects Occitan S and vernacular languages of France)
- that who consists, for a State, to carry out a Politique linguistics linguicide, i.e.:
- to incite the speakers of a language (generally different from the languages officially recognized by this State) not to transmit their language to their offspring,
- not to ensure teaching in a language of this State,
- not to allow the public use of a language,
- exaggeratedly to promote a language close to that to make disappear.
