Liner
A liner is a large passenger ship or Paquebot. Generally, it is about a motorized ship realizing of long voyages on the Océan S. the principal goal of these voyages is to transport people of a place to another.
The term “liner” is a word borrowed from the English language. This English name derives from the term “Ship off The Line” which means linership in French, that is to say ship which carries out the same line over the year (a shuttle ).
History
The liner was the fundamental mode of intercontinental voyage during more than one century, middle of the XIXe century, until the years 1960. Thereafter, aviation with taken the relay.During the golden age of the “liner”, in the first part of the 20th century, much of ships extremely luxurious voyages for a public rich person offered. However, these same ships transported a great number of relatively poor passengers, with narrow on the lower bridges. The oldest boats often offered to the immigrants of the very low prices.
The most known liner is the Transatlantic liner Titanic, which ran at the time its inaugural voyage between the Great Britain and the the United States in 1912. The Lusitania was cast in 1915 by German U-Boat during the First World War. The greatest tragedy was the loss of the Lancastria in 1940 with broad of Saint-Nazaire. This boat was run by a German bombardment, the losses are very difficult to evaluate, certain sources speaking about 3000 victims and others of 9000. The Mauretania of the Cunard was considered, at the time, like most beautiful liner of its generation. A few decades later, the same compliments were addressed to the Normandy.
After the collapse of the traffic during the Sixties, much of liners continued to sail like cruising ships.
Today
- In 2003, a small number is always in service. The Queen Mary, always with flood but with quay is used like boat museum.
- the notable liners always in service are the Queen Mary 2 of Cunard, replacing the Queen Elizabeth 2 which was displaced to be used as cruising ship.
