Line of Repentigny-Mascouche

The line of Repentigny-Mascouche , named at present as being the project of the train of the East , is a projected line of Suburban train of the great area of Montreal. The metropolitan Agence of transport (AMT) is responsible for its construction and will be elected of its exploitation after its inauguration envisaged in 2010.

Description of the project

The line was announced at the time of a press conference the March 17th 2006 following a large campaign of the residents of Repentigny wishing obtaining a Suburban train serving their area.

Of a length of approximately 51 kilometers, the line will borrow the tunnel of the Royal Mont as well as part of the rails of the Canadian National to connect the town of Repentigny until the Central station of Montreal. This portion is already used by the line Montreal/Two-Mountains with the stations Central station, Mount-Royal Canora and . The new layout between Repentigny and Terrebonne will be built along the Autoroute 640. The last section will connect Terrebonne to Mascouche by borrowing part of the Railroads Quebec-Gatineau. The train should make the Mascouche-Montreal way in 61 minutes.

Of a cost estimated at 300 million CAD, the line will make 14 stop (11 new stations, three already existing) and will offer five departures per days of week to the rush hours. Initially planned for 2008, the line will not be inaugurated before 2010.

The May 14th 2007, the metropolitan Agence of transport (AMT) joined the New Jersey Transit Corporation (NJT) for a joint call of proposals in order to acquire dual-mode engines (electric and diesel) of which five will be used for the future train of the East. These motor coaches are necessary to the line since it must pass on a line not electrified on most of its way but join that which passes in the tunnel under the Royal Mont close to the station of the same name. The passage in this tunnel prohibits the use of Locomotive S diesel and is thus electrified. The call of proposals, managed by the NJT, aims at reaching important economies of scale for the two partners in the acquisition of these engines.
