Line of Cerdagne

The line of Cerdagne , familiarly called the yellow train , or the canary indicates the line of Railroad with single track of 62,5 km which, in the the Eastern Pyrenees, connect the Gare Villefranche-with-Conflent to that of Latour-with-Carol via Make-Romeu while following the course of the Têt.

This line, although with metric spacing, fact part of the principal network and is exploited by the SNCF. It is in contact with the network with normal way at its two ends:

  • At the station of Villefranche-of-Conflent, with the line coming from Perpignan,
  • At the international station of Latour-of-Carol, with line the SNCF coming from Foix and Toulouse (normal spacing, either 1.435 mm), and with the line Renfe (broad spacing, or 1.668 mm) coming from Puigcerda and Barcelona.

Features

  • Spacing of the rails: 1.000 Misters

  • Profile longitudinally: very broken, including/understanding a rise of Villefranche de Conflent (altitude 427 m) to the collar of the Pole (1 592 m) then a descent continues towards Borough-Madam (alt. 1.143 m), the terminus with the Tower of Carol being located a little higher (alt. 1.230 m). On both sides of the collar of the Pole the slopes reach 60 and 55 ‰. The station of Bolquère-Eyne, located at 1 592,78 m of altitude is highest SNCF railway station.
  • Electrification by Conductor side rail in D.C. current 850 V.
  • Principal works of art:
    • 2 classified viaducts historic buildings:
      • viaduct of Fontpédrousse (Remained viaduct)
      • bridge of Cassagne (Gisclard bridge)
    • Tunnel S: a score
  • Exploitation: simplified, radio indication.

History

  • March 4th 1903: declaration of public utility.

  • October 31st 1909: rail crash, during bearing tests, which cost the life 6 people of which the engineer Albert Gisclard, originator of the suspended bridge which bears its name.
  • July 19th 1910: inauguration of the line (section Villefranche-with-Conflent - Mount-Louis).
  • June 28th 1911: prolongation of the line to Borough-Madam (border)
  • 1928: prolongation of the line of Borough-Madam to Latour-with-Carol on 7 km.
  • July 17th 2000: emission of a French postage stamp (facial value 3 F/0,46 €) celebrating the yellow Train of Cerdagne.
  • November 2003: Motorized delivery of two S with metric gauge track Z150 (of Swiss design), for a service entrance at the summer 2004 (financing area Languedoc-Roussillon)
