Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is a monument in the honor of the president Abraham Lincoln, built between 1915 and 1921 with Washington DC. It is at this place that Martin Luther King made her famous speech " I cuts has dream " , the August 28th 1963. It is managed by the service of the national parks ( National Park Service ).
Drawing and construction
The development and the construction of the memorial were spread out enough in time, in particular because of the First World War which stopped its building site. The association of the monument of Lincoln ( Lincoln Monument Association in English) was created by the congress of the United States in 1867 in order to raise a monument dedicated to president Lincoln. The site of construction was given only in 1901, in a marshy zone of Washington DC. The plan selected is that Henry Bacon, one of holding of the school of the Art schools. The first stone was posed the February 12th 1915 and the inauguration took place the May 30th 1922 by Warren G. Harding in the presence of Robert Todd Lincoln, the only still alive child. The materials used are the Marbre of Colorado and the Calcaire of Indiana.The shape of the building is that of a Greek temple doric surrounded by 36 10 meters height massive columns, representing each of the 36 states of the union at the time of died of Lincoln. The name of each state is noted on the top of the columns. The 48 states are registered on the external walls.
