This article summarizes the history of the Haute-Garonne.

The Haute-Garonne is a French Département located in the south of the France.

Key dates of the Haute-Garonne

  • January 20th, 1790 : The constituent Assembly creates the department Toulouse
  • February 9th, 1790 : It receives the name of Haute-Garonne (it includes/understands 8 districts, 54 cantons and 740 municipalities)
  • March 8th, 1800 : Consular decree which divides the department into 5 Arrondissements
  • September 24th, 1803 : Order of the prefect: the department gathers 46 cantons
  • November 21st, 1808 : imperial Decree which detaches from the Haute-Garonne the district of Castelsarrasin (7 cantons, 84 communes). The Haute-Garonne thus includes/understands nothing any more but 4 districts and 39 cantons.
  • 1851 : 578 common S compose the department.
  • 1924 : Creation of 10 additional communes
  • 1926 : The districts of Low wall and Villefranche-with-Lauragais are removed and their territories attached to the Arrondissement of Toulouse.
  • June 1st, 1942 : Law which restores the Arrondissement of Low wall: 3 districts exist at present: Toulouse, Low wall, Saint-Gaudens.
  • August 16th, 1973 : 4 additional cantons are created in the Urban area of Toulouse: the department counts from now on 50 cantons.
  • Law of March 2nd, 1982 : This relative law with the rights and freedoms of the territorial collectivities engages the process of decentralization and equips the department with an executive, clean competences and human and financial means necessary to its operation.
  • Law of January 7th, 1983 : Distribution of competences between the communes, the departments, the Areas and the State.
  • Law of July 22nd, 1983 : Principal competences transferred to the department: Public education, Social action and medical, Transport, Roadway system, Environment
  • February 26th, 1997 : 3 new cantons (Blagnac, Tournefeuille and the Portet-on-Garonne) are added to 50 already what exists. The Haute-Garonne account thus currently 53 cantons.
