Limburg year DER Lahn is the capital (Kreisstadt) of the department (Landkreis) Limburg-Weilburg in Hesse (Land) .

Geographical location

The city is located at the approximate center of a basin between Taunus and the Westerwald in the basin of Limburg. Thanks to its climate and with its favorable ground, this basin is a very productive agricultural area. Limburg knew since the Middle Ages a traffic of great importance thanks to its advantageous passages to cross the Lahn river.

Etymology

There are two possibilities of origin of the name Limburg under discussion:

the most popular theory but least probable is that one named the city according to Vouivre ( voivre = Lindwurm ).
the word Gallic for water is linda . One can include/understand it in connection with the Lahn river and the Linter brook.

History

The locality of Limburg is quoted for the first time into 910 under the name of “Lintpurc” at the time when the foundation “George Saint” is built. It was built around the castle extremely named Lintpurc at the 7th century. The name of Lintpurc comes from the name of the brook of Linter which flows close to the castle in the river Lahn (thus Lintpurc means “castle-extremely of the brook of Linter”). The castle-extremely was built at the time of the Mérovingiens to protect the Gué on the Lahn river located close to the brook. The city benefitted from its position located well. During the the Middle Ages, it developed like commercial city. It one of the stops on trade route was named Via publica between Cologne and Frankfurt. The urban development was strongly dependant with the foundation “George Saint” and especially with the cathedral of Limburg.

Limburg is today, with its historical center almost completely preserved and its splendid cathedral, a tourist goal of first class. One can admire the half-timbered houses 13th at the 18th century. During the cleansing of the historical center, one discovered one of the oldest half-timbered houses of Germany. It is about the Gothic house “Römer 2-4-6” which was built in 1235.
