Limassol (in Greek Λεμεσός Lemesós , in Turkish Limasol ) is the second most important city of Cyprus.
Geography
Limassol is a city and a port of the southern part of the island of Cyprus. Since the Turkish occupation of the North of the island, the city grew considerably because of arrival of Réfugié S. the port of Famagouste being located in occupied zone, that of Limassol became most important of the République of Cyprus.The city is located exactly between the sites of the two ancient and maritime cities of Amathonte, in the East, and of Kourion, in the West.
Its Western accesses are bordered by the British territory and sovereign of the base of Akrotiri.
History
The city is seat of a metropolis of the Church of Cyprus whose bishop carries the title of " Métropolite de Limassol, governing Amathonte and Kourion." The cathedral (19th century) is dedicated to Agia Napa (holy Protection of the Mother of God).The May 6th 1191, Richard Lion-hearted seized the city.
