Lily (river)

The Lys ( Leie in Dutch) is a Rivière north of the France and Belgium of which the essence of the course is channeled today. The river gives its name to the hard combat which opposed, from May 23rd to 28th 1940, the armies Belgian and German, the Bataille of the Lily.

Geography

It takes its source with Lisbourg close to Fruges to the altitude of 114,7 m.La first city which it cross-piece is Surface-on-the-Lily. In the department of North, it drains a vast plain of tectonic collapse: the Flat of the Lily , broad and remarkably plane , which constitutes one of the " pays" of the French Flanders. It is thrown in the the Scheldt with Ghent to 4,45 m of altitude, after a course of 195 km, including 85 km in France and 24,6 km in joint ownership of Houplines to Menin with Belgium.

Catchment area

On arrival of the Lily in Belgium, the catchment area is of 2  900 km ². With the upstream of the junction with Deûle, the catchment area of the Lily is of 1  690 km ². In Ghent, it is of 3  910 km ² on the level of the confluence with the Scheldt

Installations

The Lily is natural source with Surface-on-the-Lily, then it is channeled.

Its diagram of installation and management of water (WISE) is in the course of finalization. The local government agencies concerned constituted a mixed trade-union to this end. It is about the SYMSAGEL, i.e. the Mixed trade-union for the Diagram of Installation and Management of Water of the Lily . It gathers 226 common S (540  000 inhabitants) distributed between the Northern and the Pas-de-Calais.

The flower of Lily

The Iris False-Sweet flag or Yellow Iris pushed in abundance on banks of the Lily and the Lord of Armentières made the reason for his blazon of it. At the time of the annexation of its stronghold by the king of France, this one decided in its turn to add it to its own blazon.

Thus was born the " flower of Lys" … which is not a lily!
