Likasi

Likasi (in the past Jadotville ) is a provincial town of the Katanga in Democratic republic of Congo. Likasi is in the middle of the mine field of Katanga, near the mountains of Mitumba and Kundelungu. Called “city of the lights”, Likasi is among the tourist cities of Congo-Kinshasa.

It is a mining center and a node of communication important and it owes its first name, Jadotville , with the engineer Jean Jadot. Its currency is laboreque Aere , by copper and work.

The current population has more: 420000 inhabitants.

The city has a rich mineralogical museum of a collection of 600 échantillions of stones. The prison of Buluo is located at Likasi.

The hydro-electric stopping of Tshangalele with its artificial lake of 410 km ², located at 25 km, provides the city in electricity.

Communes

The town of Likasi is divided into 4 communes, themselves divided into districts:
  • Kikula with 10 districts: Kalipopo, Kanona, Kapemba, Kaponona, Kisunka, Kyubo, Mbadi, Musumba, Nkolomoni and Okito;
  • Likasi with 6 districts: Downtown area, Kapumpi, Kitabataba, SNCC and Simba;
  • Panda with 5 quariters: Kamilopa, Kankotwe, Kiwele, Mpandamayi and Muchanda;
  • Tshituru with 4 districts: Buluo, Kilima, Kimpwana and Nguya.

Geography

Climate

Located on the plate of the Haut-Katanga, Likasi has a tropical Climat soft. The average temperature is of 20 °C.

The season cig starts in April and knows the coldest period in the neighborhoods of June. In November, the rain season starts and finishes in April or March.

December is the most rainy month and the driest July. Precipitations depend on the relief and the wet trade winds of the North-East, but are mainly due to the winds of the North-West coming from the central basin of the Congo river lasting the season of rain. The dry season lasts nearly 5 months, from July to October with an complete absence of rains. During the wet season, violent rains of variable duration, on average 176,2 mm, fall approximately a day on two.

Relief

The city is full with Colline S with a Altitude on average of 1.265 m and Isohypse S to 1.100 and 1.400 Mr. His culminating point, Karajipopo in the commune of Panda, is to 1.427 Mr. It is to 120 km per road and 132 km per rail of Lubumbashi and 502 km of Kamina, distribution center of the network of the railroads of Congo. Likasi is in the center of the territory of Kambove.

History

Likasi, located at 78 km of the old capital of the king Msiri, is a center of copper since centuries, the inhabitants of the area, Sanga and Kaonde, used Four S in Argile, bellows S in skin of Antilope to melt the Malachite crushed, to extract copper and to work it from it.

An electric foundry starts its production in 1924, producing a cobaltiferous alloy; and in 1929, the factories of Shituru are open with a capacity of: 30000 tons of electrolytic copper .

Jadotville is founded by the Belgian colonial administration the December 21st 1943, and is set up with the administrative statute of city, after LéopoldVille (Kinshasa) and Élisabethville (Lubumbashi). It will be famous Likasi in 1966.

During the colonial period, much of Kasaï ens are brought to Katanga, and Likasi, to work in the mines.

In 1992, the ethnic policy of the province causes a massive departure of national kasaïens.

Today still, Likasi lives above all the industry of the Cuivre.
