Light subway

A light subway is a form of Public transport where Tram S roll completely or partially in underground. A light subway is comparable to a Tramway on the surface and to a traditional subway on its underground course.

This term is often regarded as commercial and prone to controversies among the purists, the term “pre-subway” putting as for him ahead the possibility of transformation into heavier line, and thus of greater capacity, with lower costs.

Germany

In Germany, the systems of light subways are known under the name of Stadtbahn .

Belgium

In Belgium, one finds systems of pre-subway with Antwerp, Charleroi and Brussels. These systems borrow tunnels. In Charleroi, the pre-subway also uses viaducts. It is only in Brussels that the pre-subway was the precursor future lines of Métro. In Antwerp and Charleroi, the projects of extension to a subway itself were abandoned. Moreover, the prémétro of Charleroi is in general indicated under the name of light subway .

France

  • Rouen, in High-Normandy, has a pre-subway of 15,7km serving the towns of Saint-Etienne-of-Rouvray the, Sotteville-the-Rouen and the Grand-Quevilly. The two lines form the network called '' Métrobus '' composed of 2,2km in underground (5 stations) and 13 km surfaces some (26 stations including one on a viaduct).

Austria

  • Vienna: the Stadtbahn date of 1898 where three lines were brought into service. Only a line remains nowadays, built-in with the network of Métro Viennese and numbered U6 . The second was transformed into 1976 in line of heavy Métro ( U4 ) and the third incorporated in the network the RER ( S45 ) in 1980.

  • the network of trams of Vienna includes/understands also a small portion of pre-subway near Südbahnhof (station of the South), on lines 6,18,62 and 65 (six stations). The local railroad of Vienna in Baden ( WLB ) also borrows the tunnels.

Switzerland

  • Lausanne has an underground line light, TSOL, numbered today m1 , while waiting for the opening of the line of heavy Métro m2 .

  • Zurich, economic capital of the country, has an embryo of pre-subway on the lines of trams 7 and 9. Three stations are underground. In the beginning, this tunnel was a study of the federal polytechnic school of Zurich (ETHZ- EPFZ) for the future Métro inhabitant of Zurich. When the project fell at water for reasons from cost, it was decided to re-use the tunnel for the service road by tram of the districts in the north of Zürichberg. Tunisia

Tunis, capital of the Tunisia, has a network of light subway including/understanding 5 lines (32 kilometers) and 47 stations. It was inaugurated in 1985 and, in 2006, it constitutes the only network of light subway of Africa and the Arab world.
