Light horsemen

The light horsemen are soldiers belonging, as their name indicates it, with the light Cavalerie.

The C-W communication light horseman (without X in the singular as in the plural) is more current at the time where this body still exists, and it is the orthography recommended by the Académie and Littré; some other dictionaries, like Larousse, recommend wrongly horse-light (with the X in the singular as in the plural).

In France

Old Mode

Created in 1498, the light horsemen are more slightly equipped and armed that the other bodies with cavalry. It is only by this equipment and this light armament that the light horsemen are different from the other riders, because they fulfill the same functions: scouts, guard of side, engagements limited. The light horsemen form a company within the Maison of the king as from 1593. Initially, five years of service in this unit anoblissent. Thereafter, it is reserved for wire of big family. This company is dissolved in 1787 for reasons of cost.

The light horsemen are restored by the French Empire, and in its satellite States: Kingdom of Westphalia and Grand Duchy of Berg (it is in fact in these two German principalities of the Uhlan S). The 3 {{E}} and 4 {{E}} regiments of light horsemen lancers belong to the French Army during the Hundred Days.

Royal guard of 1814 out of preserve a unit, which is dissolved in 1816.

Chronology

  • 1593 : creation of the Company of the light horsemen of the royal Guard starting from the company of ordinance of Henri IV
  • 1807: at the time of the entry of Napoleon in Poland, this one decides the formation of the regiment of the Polish light horsemen recruited among the nobility. They receive the lance only in 1809, after Wagram.
  • at the end of 1808: The Régiment of light horsemen of Berg is attached to the Guard
  • 1809: the light horsemen of Berg dissolved and is incorporated in the hunters with horse of the Guard. Another regiment, that of the hunters to horse of Berg, receives the lance in 1809 and is then attached to the Guard.
  • 1810: the 2 {{E}} light horsemen lancers of the Guard, known as " red lancers " , starting from the Régiment of hussards Dutch Guard is formed; indeed, Napoleon took as a starting point the Cosaques and introduced the use of the lance (2,75 m) into the Large army.
  • 1812: the day before the entry in Russia, the cavalry of the Guard increases its manpower. The pomegranates with horse, the hunters with horse, the dragons and the light horsemen Polish pass to 5 squadrons. Creation of a 3 {{E}} light horsemen lancers of the Guard, which is destroyed before the end of the campaign.
  • February 13rd, 1814: creation of the Regiment of light horsemen van der Burch. June 1st, 1815, this regiment takes the name of light Dragons number 5 before being integrated into the Armée with the Netherlands

In Germany

Probably with the imitation of France, of the units of light horsemen are created in Saxony in 1735, and remain until the end of the 18th century. They all dissolved or are reconverted in units of uhlans thereafter.

In 1811 Bavaria converts all its cavalry into light horsemen. After the countryside in Russia, the regiments had specialized, but the majority of the Bavarian cavalry remained light horsemen. They were during the First World War the Bavarian typical soldiers among the German army. There exists currently a group of riders which reconstitutes the Bavarian light horsemen

From 1759 to 1765, Austria-Hungary converts six regiments of dragon S into regiments of light horsemen. Double monarchy uses these units recruited among the German subjects as the hussard S. Of other units of light dragons were famous light horsemen in 1798, although having the same tasks and the same equipment; these units are become again of the units of dragons or uhlans in 1851.

In Italy

Units of light horsemen also existed in Italy.
