Lifou
Lifou is at the same time the island, most important of the islands Loyauté by its surface, a commune and a usual surface.
Located at the edge of bay of Chateaubriant, Wé is the administrative center. It gathers the principal commercial and administrative infrastructures of the island.
Lifou is a commune, chief town of the Province of the Islands, the fifth of the territory for its population. Its mayor is, since 2001, Neko Hnepeune which is also president of the assembly of the Province since 2004.
Lifou is divided into three usual districts converging all We worms. It is about the district of Wetr in North of the island, cash 17 tribes, of Gaica to the Mid-west, cash 4 tribes, and finally of the usual district of Lösi, cash 16 tribes in the South.
Like its neighbors Pond and Ouvéa, Lifou consists of massive rocks limestones of coral origin : it is a Makatea, old a Atoll gradually raised during the age. Lifou thus presents a broad central plate, corresponding to the bottom of the old atoll (the desiccated remainder of its lagoon), surrounded by a cliff crown corresponding to the old barrier récifale.
Because of its very porous calcareous substrate, Lifou is deprived of river, but it contains an important in-depth fresh water lens. This lens is accessible by water holes, which play a big role in local mythology.
The indigenous language of the island is the Drehu.
