Liffol-the-large

Liffol-the-Large is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.

Its inhabitants is called Liffolois.

Geography

Liffol-the-large is located at the extreme-west of the department - its neighbor Liffol-le-Petit belonging to the Haute-Marne - to 11 km of Neufchâteau and to 46 km of Chaumont. Its territory is bordered in south-east by the coasts of Harréville-the-Singers and Bazoilles-on-Meuse which dominates the valley of the Meuse. It is overhung in the North-East by the slopes of the Hauts-Bois whose altitude reaches 445 m and to the North-West by the slopes of the Wood-the-Count whose top amounts to 448 Mr. the territory of Liffol is crossed by the Saônelle , small left affluent of the Meuse.

The ground of the commune is made of Jurassic Calcaire and Argile. It is a rather fertile ground. One meets there also a marl yellow ocher, somewhat calcareous and very Fer rugineuse.

History

Liffol was always a large borough with a certain economic activity. At the time Roman already, there was a craft industry producing, furnace lime kilns with tiles, furnace of potter and furnace driers, in connection with the activity of the site close to Grand.

November 21st 1725, the duke of Lorraine Léopold set up Liffol-the-Large in county with provosts, under the name of Morvilliers . In 1778, the county of Morvilliers was sold to the count of Brunet-Neuilly of which it of which he took the name. Liffol-the-large its name in 1790 took again and became chief town of canton. It remained it until in 1801.
