Liepvrette
The Liepvrette is a Rivière of Alsace which is born on the Eastern slope from the Massif from the Vosges. It runs in the departments of the Haut-Rhin and the the Low-Rhine.
Geography
The Liepvrette takes its source upstream Col of Bagenelles to 750 meters of altitude close to Holy-Marie-with-Mines. It receives water of Rauenthal which comes from the Brézouard and on the left Robinot which runs Top of Héraux. It inflects its course towards the hamlet of Échéry (Holy-Marie-with-Mines). Liepvrette crosses the communes of Holy-Cross-with-Mines, Lièpvre then passes close to the village of Vancelle, to join at the exit of the village the Giessen upstream of the small town of Scherwiller, after a course of 25 km. Its annual throughput is average and does not exceed 1,92 m/s with Lièpvre and 2,10 m/s with Châtenois. Small affluents which come from the slopes of the Taennchel and of the Chalmont join Liepvrette with Lièpvre. Liepvrette receives also water of Rombach which takes its source with the collar of Hingrie with Rombach-the-Franc.The principal affluents of Liepvrette are:
-
with Holy-Marie-with-Mines: Rauenthal, which takes its source with the Brézouard (1228 m), the Haste, which comes from the hamlet of Échéry, Fischtal, Robinot, Hergauchamps, Isenbach which takes its source since the small valley of Saint-Blaise;
- with Holy-Cross-with-Mines: Timbach, Sobache, Large Rombach, Small Rombach;
- with Lièpvre: Votembach, Rombach, Mollembach, Kessenthal
- with Vancelle: the brook of Vancelle
The Rombach takes its source close to the collar of Hingrie and traverses a way of 8,5 km before jetter in Liepvrette. It crosses the Hameau of the Hingrie and recovers water of Volbach which takes its source with the locality of Degelingoutte, then it is enlarged by water of Bestégoutte which comes from Hautegarde. With the Hingrie, the brook of Rombach recovers also the sources which come from Barançon, of Biagoutte (which comes from the Hung Cat). While crossing the village of Rombach-the-Franc, Rombach receives also the small brooks of Pierreusegoutte, Naugigoutte, Hargoutte and Vaurière whose sources come from Grandgoutte and Large High.
Hydrology
Liepvrette is a river of mountain with a very upstream marked energy (coarse load of blocks type or rollers) and which attenuates towards the downstream, but with a more important side dynamics in the content of the valley, marked by a river style of " type; tresse" or " meanders divagants". It is about a river of first category piscicultural, i.e. salmonidés dominate (trouts and salmons). Moreover it belongs to the classified rivers, i.e. the migrating fish must circulate on the whole of the river.
History
Liepvrette named in the old Carolingian documents " Laimaha " or " Laima " or those in Latin " Lebraha " or " Lebera " was also known with the Middle Ages by the inhabitants of German language of Holy-Marie-with-Mines under the name of " Landbach" or " Landwasser" , i.e. the brook provincial." Lebraha " is undoubtedly a Celtic name of origin which seems to come from the word '" Leber " a Latinized form. Towards the end of the XVIIIe century, the Alsatian and Lorraine part was separated by the brook from Lièpvrette and was used as delimitation of territory between the Duchy of Lorraine and the Seigniory of Ribeaupierre.
