Liepaja

Liepāja (German: Lithuanian Libau, : Liepoja, Polish: Russian Lipawa, : Либава/Libava or Лиепая/Liyepaya, Yiddish: ליבאַװע/Libave) is a coastal town of Latvia.

The badges of the city are a red lion (symbol of the Courlande) and a green lime on white zone. It also has an anthem called " Pilsēta, kurā piedzimst vējš" (the city where was born the wind)

Geographical location

Liepāja is located on banks of the the Baltic, located about at 200 km in the west of Rīga. It is accessible by bus and train since Rīga in about 3 hours. Liepaja also has an airport, the air link is ensured with the capital from June September.

History

Liepāja was rested by fishermen Curonien S. One finds his name evoked for the first time in 1253, whereas it was called Lyva. The Order Livonien, under the aegis of the Order Teutonique, established these installations as being the town of Libau in 1263. The current name, Liepāja, started to be increasingly used after 1560. In 1625, the Duc Friedrich Kettler de Courlande allocated in Liepāja the right to be a city with whole share, rights that the king Sigismond III of Poland approved in 1626.

Liepāja and the Courlande passed under Russian control in 1795 during the partition of Poland. The city became a major port on the Baltic for the Russians, and was the central point of the loading of the immigrants bound for the the United States. For a short period in 1919, whereas all Latvia was occuée by the Bolchevik S, Liepāja was the provisional seat of the government for the country.

Economy

Liepāja is a port whose water is always free ices, which makes it very active. The city lays out of metallurgical industries , sugar and Textile S. It also lays out of shipyards and is used as point for exports of Nourriture and Bois (the Latvia is covered to almost 50% of forests)

The importance of metallurgical industry gave its name to the team of hockey and Foot of the city: Metalurgs

Liepāja is also defined as a tourist city and a balneal city.

  • Center town and neighborhood, containing a great number of houses out of wooden worked, but often left with the abandonment.
  • the sand beach end, surrounded by a large surface of leisure. Amber fragments resulting from fossilized forests absorbed under the Baltic frequently fail on sand, one finds them while seeking attentively among the algae. The largest piece of amber of the world was found besides not far.

The surroundings are also of a great interest for the amateurs of nature, with a natural reserve which lodges horses and wild cows on bank Is lake. its access is restricted, you will have to get information with the tourist office.
