Amenemhat 1st and its son and successor Sésostris 1st built their funerary complexes there on a level strongly inspired by that of the pyramidal complex of Pépi {{II}} located him at Saqqarah. A new royal residence
When Amenemhat {{Ier}} (-1991/-1962) arrived at the capacity, it founded a new capital, some share in north, forsaking of this fact Thèbes. This new royal residence, it called it Amenemhat Itchtaouy (or Itj-Tawi) “ Amenemhat (is) that which seizes the two grounds ”. It is this royal residence which is the theater of the events brought back in the Conte of Sinouhé, famous work of the Moyen Empire
The city forever be localized. The fact however, that almost each king of built his monument close to the oasis of the Fayoum, carried out the specialists to think that the new capital of Amenemhat 1st was to be located some share close to this oasis. The monument of Amenemhat 1st is close to the modern village of Licht (or El-Lisht), on a site located at the south of Dahchour, not far from Meïdoum (or Medoum). The Egyptologists thus suppose that Amenemhat 1st chose this site because it was close to its capital, with stronger reason since it was followed in that of its successor, Sésostris {{Ier}} (-1962/-1928) and of this fact they identify Itchtaouy with Licht.
