Libyque glass

The glass Libyque is a kind of Verre natural present on 6500 km ² of the Désert Libyque.

The geological origin

The origin of this glass is discussed. It was initially believed that it was about glass coming from a Météorite. But the absence of Crater of impact clearly and the presence of quartz vaporized indicate that the creation of this glass could be related to the thermal radiations caused by a fireball resulting from the disintegration of a Astéroïde entering the Atmosphère. The fireball created by this disintegration would have generated glass of the type Tectite comparable with the Trinitite, glass created by the exposure of Sable to radiations of a atomic Explosion. Other interpretations consider that it is rather about Impactite.

The thesis of disintegration preceding the entry in the atmosphere contradicts thus the theory of the film Armageddon. Indeed, the Explosion of an asteroid right before its penetration in the atmosphere would be much more dangerous than the simple explosion in a point of this asteroid.
