Libtool

GNU Libtool is a Logiciel Project GNU which is used to create portable libraries .

In the past, if a programmer wanted to benefit from the advantages of the dynamic libraries, it was to write code specific to each platform on which the library was compiled. It was to also write a system of configuration allowing the user who installs the software to decide which type of library compile.

Libtool simplifies the task of the programmer by encapsulating at the same time the dependences compared to each platform, as well as the user interface, in only one script. This tool is designed so that all the functionality of each platform is accessible via a generic interface, while hiding the obscure details with the programmer.

The interface of Libtool aims at being coherent. The users are not supposed to have to read documentation of low level to succeed in making compile dynamic libraries. They should not have that to carry out script configures (or an equivalent), and Libtool should take care of the details.

One uses typically Libtool with Autoconf and Automake, two other tools of the system of compilation GNU.
