Library and museum of Greediness

Created by a Non-profit-making association, managed by a small team of voluntary, the library and the museum of the Gourmandise is devoted to the history of the Gastronomie.

Library

It represents the most important collection of books of gastronomy of Belgium and one of twenty larger of Europe.

The books, mainly old, treat Alimentation, arts of the table and Tabac, mainly in Europe and particularly in Belgium. They are classified by topics: bibliographies, history, biographies, réceptaires, religious Kitchen, Dietetic kitchen of the children, , Vegetarianism, Vegetarianism, domestic economy, Sociology, food chemistry, publicities, iconography, literature, music, etc The data-processing encoding is in hand. An outline of the catalog is reproduced on Internet site.

N.B. It has the single specimen of the “English Cook”.

The library also has other funds:

History of art and archeology
Dance and choreography
local and dialectal Files
History of the Station and the writing (funds created in 2004 with the Museum Postmaster addresses located in the same building).

The works are consultable on written request and go, being given the voluntary help of the librarians.

Museum

Authentic objects of gastronomy, tables original, movable, objects of control and Curiosité are laid out in covered rooms of the XVIIe century of Voute S of edges.

The visits are always guided: the visitors are accompanied by a guide which explains, in an attractive and humorous way, the history of the kitchen by taking account of its interlocutors. The children, the elderly, the people with reduced mobility, the Partially-sighted person S, the light Handicapé S mental thus find there a reception adapted.

Exposures

Library and museum also organize temporary exhibitions In situ, take part in cultural big demonstrations (like Made in Belgium in Brussels), and collaborate with other museums or institutions of research.

Additional activities

Since 2002, the asbl organizes Balade S guided for the discovery of a Patrimoine gastronomical private individual: wild plants edible.

In addition, the tavern of the museums proposes dishes according to receipts resulting from the library, thus putting at the range of the public an old and regional kitchen.

Sites of activity

Library and museum are installed in the Farm castrale of Hermalle-under-Huy (in the administrative entity of Engis), old farm of the contiguous castle. The buildings, which date from XVIIe, XVIIe and XIXe centuries, can be the subject of a guided visit for groups of visitors.

Internet site offers, in addition to tourist diary and information, of the Leitartikeces on particular subjects of gastronomy.
