Libraries of Toulouse

The libraries of Toulouse include/understand the Médiathèque José-Cabanis, the library of study and the inheritance of the street of Périogord and a score of libraries of district.

History

The history of these libraries begins at the 18th century with the bringing together from important public libraries. The increase and the enrichment of these collections are such as the library, classified in 1897, is installed in 1935 in the building of the Toulouse architect Jean Montariol, street of Périgord. In 1940 is open in this same building one of the first library for Youth in France. Following an active policy of acquisitions, the library is devoted to the conservation and the enrichment of the written inheritance and of an abundant regional documentation. After important renovation works, the library of study and inheritance offer to the readers new services.

The network of the libraries of district is born in 1958 with the construction of the first library in center town. The systematic modernization whose they are the object accompanies by a program by restoration by the buildings and new constructions.

With the restoration of the library of study and inheritance, 2003 see the completion of the Médiathèque José-Cabanis. Located in the middle of the new urban pole creates in the district Marengo, the media library Jose Cabanis is signed by the architect Jean-Pierre Buffi, associated to the Toulouse cabinet of architecture Séquences. The media library offers to the public close to: 200000 documents on all supports and of the equipment Multi-media. Regular cultural programming is proposed in the two auditoriums, the showroom and the small theater intended for the children.
