Li Tenghui (Chinese: 李登輝; Taiwanese: Lí Teng-hui; Pinyin: Lǐ Dēnghuī), born the January 15th 1923, is a politician of the République of China, or Taiwan. It was the president of the Republic of China of the January 15th 1988 with the May 20th 2000 and the person in charge of the party Kuomintang (KMT) of 1988 with 2000. Its mandate was marked by the continuation of the major democratic reforms initiated by Chiang Ching-kuo, which yielded the capacity in favor of an electoral democracy. It promoted also the movement of localization of Taiwan and followed an aggressive foreign politics to gain diplomatic allies again. Its detractors showed it corruption, and to be a secret defender of the independence of Taiwan. At the conclusion of its mandate, Li Tenghui confirmed part of these charges while becoming a radical activist in favor of the independence of Taiwan, and is currently the “spiritual leader” of the Union for the solidarity of Taiwan.
