Li Shizhen

Li Shizhen or Chinese 李時珍 (1518 - 1593) is a Médecin, herbalist and Naturaliste Chinese contemporary of the dynasty Ming.

Member of the imperial Academy of medicine of Beijing, Li Shizhen is especially known like the author of the Grand Treaty of Medical Matter ( Bencao gangmu or Chinese 本草綱目). This work written between 1552 and 1578 then republished and supplemented in 1580 and 1587 is a vast medical encyclopedia in particular devoted to the therapeutic produced and the medicinal plants. One finds there in particular descriptions of 1892 substances therapeutic among which one counts 1094 species of plants and 275 mineral. 444 animal species are also described. The work comprises 53 volumes, 1160 illustrations and 11000 regulations. It is published in the Japan in 1607, then translated into Russian, German, French and English at the 18th century.
